Android 17 update season: Samsung shows up early, and the Pixel 6 says goodbye

One UI 9 is reaching Galaxy phones faster than usual, Pixels got their October patch, and the Pixel 6 has reached the end of its support window.

Google released Android 17 for Pixels on June 16. Now, in early October, the rest of the Android world is catching up, and for once the gap is fairly short. Here’s what’s landing on your phone, roughly in order of how many people it affects.

Samsung: One UI 9 is moving quickly

Samsung began the stable One UI 9 rollout, built on Android 17, in South Korea on September 28. By October 5, Android Authority reported it was reaching more Galaxy S25, Galaxy Z Fold 7, and Galaxy Z Flip 7 models in the US, on both carrier and unlocked versions. Availability still depends on your carrier. Tech Times reports India and Europe followed around October 5 and 6, and the S24 series, Z Fold 6, and Z Flip 6 started getting it in Korea on October 6.

Don’t expect a redesign. Samsung did the visual overhaul in One UI 8.5 back in May, and this release is about smaller improvements. Those include a more customizable Quick Panel, a blue indicator that shows when an app is using your location (tap it to see which app), a quicker way to move windows in DeX, a “Tape” tool in Samsung Notes for hiding parts of a note, and new accessibility features. The download is big, too: Android Authority cites reports of about 3.9GB for the S25 Ultra if you’re coming from One UI 8.5.

For foldable owners, the most important change comes from Android 17 itself. Apps that target the new API level can no longer lock their orientation or refuse to resize on screens wider than 600dp. In plain terms, stubborn apps should finally stretch and rotate properly on a Fold’s inner screen. One known problem: some Z Fold 7 owners say the three-finger volume gesture stopped working reliably after the update, and Samsung has posted a workaround.

Pixel: the October patch, and maybe the end for the Pixel 6

Google’s October update for Android 17 fixes 28 security issues, plus six more that only affect Pixels, according to 9to5Google. It also includes three bug fixes: the keyboard sometimes not showing up in search fields, distorted ringtones on some VoIP calls, and photos or videos saving in the wrong orientation on the Pixel 11 series.

The bigger news is the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. They launched in 2021 with three years of OS updates, and in December 2024 Google extended that to five years of OS and security updates. As Android Police notes, that window runs through October 2026, which means this month. Google hasn’t said this is the final update, and an emergency fix is always possible. Still, unless Google extends support again, Pixel 6 owners should start planning an upgrade.

Motorola: the Razr Ultra joins in

Motorola started rolling out Android 17 to the Razr Ultra 2026 in the US this week. GSMArena reports a hefty 4.17GB download. It brings Motorola’s Qira AI agent, a double-tap action you can remap on the AI key, and an intensity slider for HDR.

Our take

Android updates used to mean waiting months while Pixel owners got everything first. This year, Samsung’s 2025 flagships started getting a stable Android 17 build a little over three months after the Pixel launch, and owners of older models aren’t far behind. That’s real progress. The Pixel 6 is the other side of the story. Five years of updates is good, but it still ends, and this month is when it does.
